Fitting for New York, the last task was to raise more money by selling tickets for four different Broadway productions. As usual, the money raised went to charity. Marilu Henner was the leader for Empressario while Frank Lombardi led team Hydra. Note that both Marilu and Frank have strong backgrounds in theater.
Empressario’s Performance: Marilu pulled out all of the stops for this task. She contacted booking agents to find out which productions sell better. She and the rest of the team contact their high net worth friends to purchase tickets at inordinately high prices. Overall, the team worked well and looked poised to easily glide to their first win.
Hydra’s Performance: In contrast, the men had several interpersonal and other challenges. Piers Morgan and Stephen Baldwin butted heads. The team had trouble selling the tickets, and perhaps their location wasn’t ideal. Similar to the women, team Hydra also reached out to their network of friends to purchase tickets at “premium” prices.
The Results: Both teams worked very hard, but at the end of the day, team Hydra delivered their fourth consecutive win. The Women lost by just $2000; they raised $31,000 compared to Hydra’s $33,000. Unfortunately, Empressario’s last very big sales came just a few minutes after the task was officially over, so they were not able to count those contributions. Marilu brought back Olympic Gymnast Jennie Finch and Carol Alt. Jennie Finch was brought back because she didn’t display “leadership qualities” whereas Carol was brought back due to personality differences. When asked why she didn’t bring back Omarosa instead of Carol, Marilu replied she, Nely, and Omarosa work very well together (shock)!
This week’s celebrity judge Vince McMahon (WWE) pointed out that everyone EXCEPT Jennie Finch was fighting hard to stay on.
The Lessons
Be tenacious. Ultimately, Jennie Finch was fired because she didn’t feel that she could compete with these women in the boardroom. She spoke of how nasty everyone was to each other and wanted no part of hit. Although she left with dignity, it would have been great to have someone with that type of character still in the game. Unfortunately, she chose not to fight to stay in. She obviously is a fierce competitor based on the Olympics alone. It would have been nice to see all of her success translate into an Apprentice win and a generous check for her charity.
Be Loyal to your Friends. I have to be honest that I was surprised to see that Omarosa was not selected to go back to the boardroom during this past episode until I heard Marilu’s answer: we work well together. Omarosa has wisely aligned herself to one of the strongest players on her team. Now that I think about it, Nely, Marilu, and Omarosa have never said anything negative about each other. Alliances help in reality shows, business, and life. Your personality, skill, or goals may help you establish those alliances, but loyalty keeps those alliances in tact. Omarosa and Nely were loyal to Marilu when they were in leadership, and it is paying off greatly now.
